How to create a custom racetrack

Choosing a racetrack

When you include a Virtual Race, Group Virtual Race, or Team Virtual Race mode in a challenge, you'll need to select a racetrack theme. Most admins choose to go with one of our preset racetracks, but if you're feeling creative, you can choose to create your own milestones for a preset MoveSpring map or to create your own map with optional milestones through the MoveSpring Racetrack Creator!

Learn more about whether to choose a preset or custom racetrack here.

Customizing a racetrack

If you've decided to create your own milestones for a preset MoveSpring map or to create your own map and optional milestones, you'll need to use the MoveSpring Racetrack Creator*.

All MoveSpring plans have access to the MoveSpring Racetrack Creator. Use this article as your starting point for creating your custom racetrack.

*To use a preset MoveSpring map with the default milestones or without milestones, you do not need to use the Racetrack creator. Please create a challenge to access these options.

Getting started

Step 1: Access the Racetrack Creator

  1. Select the Challenges tab in the side navigation menu

  2. Toggle to the Custom racetracks page

  3. Select the green + Create racetrack button

Step 2: Choose your settings

  1. Select the Edit button within the Settings section

  2. Choose to use an existing map from the MoveSpring library or upload a custom map.

    • If using a map from the MoveSpring library, you will be required to customize milestones. To use a map from the MoveSpring library with the existing milestones, there is no need to customize a racetrack before creating your challenge.

    • If uploading a custom map, choose whether or not you'd like to include milestones for your map by toggling to "Yes" or "No".

Not sure whether to use an existing map or upload your own? See this article to learn more.

  3. Enter a Racetrack name. Note: This will only be visible in the admin center, not in the end-user app.

4. Select Save when finished. Select Save and exit to save your work as a draft and return to it later, or continue to the next step.

Step 3: Choose your map

Use an existing MoveSpring map:

  1. Select the Edit button within the Your Map section to get started.

  2. Choose a map from the options presented. Click Select to pick a map.

Upload a custom map:

For a full article on uploading a custom map, click here.

To upload a custom map, you'll start by uploading your map scenes:

  1. Select the Edit button within the Your Map section to get started.

  2. Upload your map via individual scenes. Select the grey + Upload button for each scene to upload an image and crop as needed. Note: A minimum of 3 scenes is required, with up to 12 scenes maximum. Each scene appears in the app at 750px wide x 872px tall. Learn more from our spec document.

  3. Select Save when finished.

  4. Select the second Edit button to select a path.

  5. Scroll horizontally to view each path option. Select a path to preview how it will appear on your custom map.

  6. Select Save when finished. Select Save and exit to save your work as a draft and return to it later, or continue to the next step.

Step 4: Choose your milestones (optional for custom maps)

For a full guide to adding custom milestones to a map, click here.

  1. Select the Edit button within the Your Milestones section to get started

  2. Select the green + Add or + Add milestone button

  3. Specify the location of each milestone by a percentage (1-99%) of the total race distance. EX: Milestone 1 appears at 10% of the overall distance goal. If the goal is 100 miles, the milestone will appear at the 10 mile mark.

  4. Include both required fields: milestone title and milestone image

  5. Include optional fields as desired: milestone body, video, logo

  6. Select Preview milestone if desired to see how it will appear in the app.

  7. Select Save milestone when finished.

  8. Repeat this process for each milestone, with a maximum of 20 milestones allowed.

  9. Select the blue Done button when finished.

  10. Select Save as draft to save your work as a draft and return to it later, or continue to the next step.

Step 5: Publish your racetrack & create a challenge

  1. When you're ready to use your racetrack in a challenge, select the green Publish button:

  2. You will see that your racetrack is now live and ready to use. Select the blue + Create challenge button to return to the Admin Center.

  3. Include a Virtual or Group Race mode in your challenge

  4. Select your new racetrack theme and proceed with challenge creation. When your challenge starts, you'll be able to see your selected map and milestone options!

Note: To preview how your racetrack will look before running an official challenge with your organization, create a test challenge instead with a short distance goal (e.g. 1 or 2 miles or kilometers) so that you can preview the map and milestones. Remember to set the challenge to Hidden so only you can see the challenge.
